How Kalshi's weather markets work

Thirty seconds, no jargon.

  • 01

    Pick a city

Every day Kalshi and Polymarket each ask, city by city: how hot will it get? Kalshi's answers are six brackets, like 64° to 65°; Polymarket's are ranges of 2°F, or 1°C in its world cities.

  • 02

Each answer pays $1 if the high lands in it

The price, like 63¢, is what one contract or share costs right now. A higher price means traders think that answer is more likely.

  • 03

    Watch the thermometer

One weather station decides each city, and the two exchanges don't always pick the same one: Central Park for Kalshi's New York, LaGuardia for Polymarket's. Almanac shows both stations' readings live all day, and how every city settled.

Information and tools, never picks

  • It never says what to buy or sell, and never places an order.
  • It doesn't connect to your Kalshi or Polymarket account.
  • It doesn't claim its weather model is better than the market. Its own test found the market's prices were more accurate, and it says so next to every model number.

How good is the model?

Not as good as the market. In a 60-day test across all 24 cities, the market's own prices were more accurate than Almanac's weather model, both a day ahead and on the day. That's why Almanac shows facts, not picks.

Questions

What are Kalshi's and Polymarket's weather markets?
Both list a market for each city's high temperature every day: Kalshi in 24 US cities, with six brackets like 64° to 65°; Polymarket in US and world cities, with 2°F or 1°C ranges. Every contract or share on the answer the official high lands in pays $1. The price is what one costs. How it works
Does Almanac tell me what to buy?
No. It shows the data and the rules and leaves every decision to you. It never places an order and never connects to your Kalshi or Polymarket account.
Where do the numbers come from?
Prices from Kalshi's and Polymarket's public market data; station readings from aviationweather.gov and the Iowa Environmental Mesonet; official highs from the NWS climate reports; forecasts from Open-Meteo and the NWS. Every number on screen names its source and the time it was fetched.
How good is Almanac's weather model?
Not as good as the market, and Almanac says so. In a test over Aug 20 to Oct 18, 2026, the market's own prices were more accurate than the model, both a day ahead and on the day. That record sits next to every model number. Read the test
What does it cost?
Every city page, the rules and the fee calculator are free with no account, with prices 30 minutes late. A free account follows three cities. Why does Kalshi's day run from 1 AM to 1 AM?
Kalshi's markets settle on the NWS climate day, midnight to midnight local standard time, which doesn't move for daylight saving. Polymarket's run on the local calendar day, midnight to midnight on the clock. How these markets settle
